If you are looking for a unique and offbeat travel experience, a visit to Orchha should be on your list. Located in the Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh, Orchha is a small town known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and natural beauty. From Delhi, it takes about 8 hours to reach Orchha by road, and the journey is well worth it.

Getting There

The best way to reach Orchha from Delhi is by taking a train or driving. If you prefer to travel by train, you can take the Gatiman Express from Delhi to Jhansi (now Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi Junction - VGLJ), which is the nearest railway station to Orchha. Though there are several trains to Jhansi but travelling on India’s Fastest Train can have another level of experience (Vande Bharat can run faster than it but currently it’s the fastest). From Jhansi, you can take a taxi or bus to reach Orchha, which is located around 18 km away.


If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car or take a taxi from Delhi. The journey takes around 8 hours, and the route is via the NH44 and NH27 highways. The roads are well-maintained, and you will pass through many small towns and villages on the way.

Tourist Places to Visit

Orchha is a treasure trove of historical monuments, temples, and natural beauty. Here are some of the must-visit places in Orchha:


  • Orchha Fort: The Orchha Fort is one of the most iconic landmarks in the town. Built in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajput king, Rudra Pratap Singh, the fort is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. It houses several palaces, temples, and courtyards, each with its unique history and charm. The most famous among them are the Jahangir Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, and Raj Mahal.
  • Chaturbhuj Temple: The Chaturbhuj Temple is a unique temple that was built in the 16th century to house the idol of Lord Rama, which was originally installed in the Ram Raja Temple. The temple has an impressive facade and is located on a raised platform, giving it a grand appearance.
  • Ram Raja Temple: The Ram Raja Temple is one of the few temples in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king. Legend has it that when the idol of Lord Rama was being taken to another location, it refused to move from its spot and hence, a temple was built around it. The temple has a stunning architecture, with intricate carvings and paintings on the walls.
  • Betwa River: The Betwa River is a natural beauty that flows through Orchha. You can take a boat ride on the river or simply sit by the banks and enjoy the serene surroundings.
  • Phool Bagh: The Phool Bagh is a beautiful garden that was built by the Bundela kings. It has several fountains, pools, and flower beds, and is a great place to relax and unwind.
  • Rai Parveen Mahal: The Rai Parveen Mahal is a palace that was built for the poetess and courtesan, Rai Parveen, who was a favourite of the Bundela king, Indramani. The palace has a unique architecture and is surrounded by a beautiful garden.
  • Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple: The Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, with five faces. It is located on the banks of the Betwa River and is considered to be a sacred site.
  • Sound and Light Show: The Sound and Light Show at the Orchha Fort is a must-see attraction.
